WELCOME TO MINNEAPOLIS!

Dear Colleagues:

Welcome to the era of the second derivative of change. What an exciting time to be a member of MSA! Our society is uniquely suited to respond to the accelerating rate of change in the physical and biological sciences, in instrumental developments and applications, and to institutional changes necessitated by current social and economic forces.

On behalf of the Microscopy Society of America, I invite you to attend the 54th Annual Meeting. Microscopy & Microanalysis '96 is a joint meeting with the Microbeam Analysis Society (MAS) and the Microscopical Society of Canada/Societe de Microscopie du Canada (MSC/SMC).

Scientific Program Chair Nestor Zaluzec and Vice- Chair Ruth Dimlich of MSA have produced an exciting and innovative program in collaboration with colleagues from MAS and MSC/ SMC. You will find a wide selection, whether your interest is in HRTEM, LVSEM, AEM, EELS, CBED, FE, EDX, XRD AFM STM, LM or TEM. Posters will continue to be an integral part of the program. A special feature is a pre-meeting (Saturday) international symposium on applications of Field Emission Scanning Electron Microscopy in biology, including cryopreparation, chaired by Stan Erlandsen.

Our commercial exhibitors will bring us their knowledge of the marketplace. Come see and touch the latest instruments and accessories. Our meeting has traditionally presented the world's largest exhibition of different kinds of microscopes and associated equipment.

An outstanding scientific program, splendid exhibits, traditional fellowship with colleagues, a superb convention center and a fine city await. All we need to complete the picture is you.

Margaret Ann Goldstein, President

Microscopy Society of America

Dear Colleagues:

On behalf of the Microbeam Analysis Society, I also want to encourage you to attend, what I feel is going to be a very special meeting. For MAS this will be the first year of our long- term joint sponsorship with MSA of the Microscopy & Microanalysis Annual Meeting. The major change from the previous jointly sponsored meetings will be in the single, integrated and comprehensive program structure. This new approach to the program, combined with the consistently extensive commercial exhibits, should make this a truly outstanding meeting. As always the success of a new approach is dependent on the role of individuals and, in this case, I want to specifically mention the MAS program representatives. Joe Michael (as MAS Program Chair) and Jon McCarthy (as MAS Program Co- Chair) are providing the strong leadership that will insure that, in the new program format, topics of particular interest to MAS members, will be well represented.

I hope that you are already incorporating the Microscopy & Microanalysis '96 Meeting into your summer plans. Scientifically and technically, I guarantee that you will not be disappointed, and as a native "Minnesotan," I can also assure you that it's a great place to visit, particularly with a family.

Dale E. Johnson, President

Microbeam Analysis Society

Dear Colleagues:

On behalf of the Microscopical Society of Canada/Societe de Microscopie du Canada, it is my pleasure to invite you to attend our 23rd Annual Meeting in Minneapolis, Minnesota. This will be our fourth meeting together with MSA and MAS, beginning with the 11th Annual Meeting in Detroit and following a cycle of joint meetings every fourth year since then.

These joint meetings are an excellent opportunity to renew acquaintances with microscopists from both the United States and Canada, and to exchange information with a truly large and diverse group of scientists. The scientific program promises to be stimulating for microscopists from both the biological and physical sciences ()nee again the commercial exhibit should prove to be the world's largest showing of microscopes and related accessories. Centrally located, the joint Meeting is accessible to our members from both east and west.

Please join us for an exciting meeting and the warm fellowship which has become a tradition in the microscopy community. f look forward to meeting you in Minneapolis.

Cher Collegues,

To MSA, MAS, MSC/SMC members, and all other colleagues interested in microscopy and microanalysis:

The Minnesota Microscopy Society invites you to Minneapolis to attend Microscopy & Microanalysis '96. In Minneapolis, the "City of Lakes," you will find the Convention Center, meeting hotels and the dining/entertainment/shopping areas of downtown within convenient walking distance from each other. Many of these locations are also connected by an elevated enclosed walkway known as the skyway system.

Minneapolis, St. Paul and their suburbs form the Greater Twin Cites Metro Area which contains nearly 1,000 lakes, a national wildlife refuge located in the shadow of the Minneapolis - St. Paul International Airport, lakeside resorts just 40 miles from a dozen Fortune 500 companies, a $1.5 billion recording industry, one of the nation's ten best zoos, the Mall of America and more live theaters than any area outside New York. Add to this the world's largest inland seaport at Duluth on Lake Superior, the Minnesota/ Ontario Boundary Waters Canoe Area, and the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, all within a few hours drive, and you have just some of the reasons why we are encouraging you to bring family or friends with you when you come to the Meeting. Our Local Arrangements Committee has organized several events to give you a taste of the Twin Cities. These are listed in the General Information section (p. 3) of this Bulletin, along with attractions you and your family/ friends can visit on your own. We've also compiled a Special Pull- out Social Events and Attractions Section (pp. 13 - 16, green), which we encourage you to remove and refer to as you plan your trip.

Come a few days before the Meeting or stay a few days after and sample just a bit of the variety this part of North America has to offer.

Ev Osten, Chair

Local Arrangements Committee

Challenges in Microscopy & Microanalysis

"Challenges in Microscopy & Microanalysis" is the overall theme for the 1996 scientific program, and symposia and general sessions have been planned accordingly. These sessions will highlight recurrent topics in microscopy and microanalysis which are of common interest to all three participating Societies. Advances in instrumentation and methods, as well as their applications to the physical and biological sciences have been included.

To facilitate maximum interaction of individuals attending the meeting, the Meeting format has been altered significantly for 1996 in comparison to past years. The number of parallel platform sessions has been reduced and rather than the single poster session of the past, there will be a special poster session highlighting approximately one- fourth of the posters each day. All posters will, however, remain on display in the Exhibit Hall for the entire week. There will be no competing platform sessions during poster sessions. Importantly, these changes also will increase the time available to visit the commercial exhibits.
