All scientific poster presentations at the Meeting automatically are considered for the following Awards, the winners of which will be announced at the MSA Business Meeting.

MSA Poster Awards for the best posters in both the physical and biological sciences. First and Second Prizes, $100 and $50, respectively, are awarded in each category. Sponsored by MSA.

The Cecil Hall Award for the best poster illustrating the application of analytical microscopy to a biological system. One Prize of $500. Sponsored by Association Management, Inc.

The Diatome Awards for the posters illustrating the best use of diamond- knife ultramicrotomy in either the biological or physical sciences. First Prize: one- week, all- expense- paid trip to Switzerland for two; Second and Third Prizes: Swiss watches. Sponsored by Diatome U.S.

POSTER INSTRUCTIONS

Papers will be assigned by the Program Committee to either a platform or poster presentation, unless "prefer poster" is specified on the Data Form, in which case that preference will be honored. Corresponding Authors will be notified of this assignment after the program has been made final in April. The criteria for assignment of papers include the nature and size of the session and the number of related simultaneous sessions.

Each poster will be allocated a 94"- wide by 46"- high display area. A 12"- high strip at the top should contain the title of the paper and the names and affiliations of the authors. Authors are advised that it is not appropriate simply to attach a copy of the abstract to the display board, just as it would not be appropriate simply to read the abstract during a platform presentation. The poster should have large legible text and figures, and describe the results in a manner that would be clear to a reader, even in the author's absence. Velcro will be provided.

The Meeting format has been altered significantly for 1996. Rather than a single poster session late Wednesday afternoon, there will be a special poster session after lunch each day, highlighting approximately one- fourth of the posters.

Authors are expected to be present at their poster on the particular day assigned from I :00 p.m. to 2:45 p.m. However, all posters should be hung as soon as possible after the Exhibit Hall opens at noon on Monday, and must remain on display until Thursday afternoon. Corresponding Authors of papers assigned as posters will be notified of the assignment of a particular day's session (Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, or Thursday) after the program has been made final in April.

MICROGRAPH COMPETITION

The meeting will include a micrograph competition sponsored by MSA. The Society's intention is to promote innovative blending of art and science by avoiding usual restriction as to content and method.

The competition is open to all forms of microscopic imaging. Judges, appointed by MSA Council, will select up to four entries (two color and two black & white) as winners of $100 cash prizes. Winners will be selected on the basis of artistic merit and general audience appeal, regardless of the subject matter, the method or type of microscopy, or the means and materials used to produce the displayed micrograph. However, winning entries must be scientifically significant, that is, they must either contain novel information useful in resolving a scientific issue and/or present established information in a way that dramatically enhances its comprehension or interpretation. Submitted micrographs must be accompanied by a brief description, not only of their technical aspects, but also of their scientific significance. Although all submitted micrographs will be displayed, entries regarded by the judges not to be scientifically significant will not be considered for prizes. Please read the following rules carefully:

Only members of MSA, MAS and/or MSC/SMC are eligible to enter.

Any individual may submit either one or two entries, but no more than two.

No individual may win more than one prize.

Entries must be 11 " x 14", may be mounted vertically or horizontally, and must be affixed to a stiff lightweight support, such as 1/4" foam board. Micrographs may either be flush mounted or have borders so long as the overall dimensions of the entry are 11 " x 14".

Entries must be brought to the Meeting and mounted on the display boards by the entrant or his/her delegate. Velcro will be provided. Entries must be mounted between noon and 5:00 p.m. on Monday, August 12 and non- winners removed between noon and 3:00 p.m. on Thursday, August 15. Micrographs remaining on the display boards after then will be discarded.

Winning micrographs will be incorporated into the MSA Travelling Poster Exhibit for 1996- 1997 and will be returned to the owners during the summer of 1997.

Winners will be announced during Tuesday afternoon's poster session and be recognized at the MSA Business Meeting.

To enter: Send your name, address, telephone and fax numbers, and a description of 200 words or less for each entered micrograph (maximum of two) to Microscopy & Microanalysis '96, 4 Barlows Landing Rd., Suite 8, Pocasset, MA 02559, fax it to 508- 563- 1211, or email it to BusinessOffice@MSA.Microscopy.Com. Descriptions must explain the technical aspects of the entry and its scientific significance as defined above.

Entry information must be received by July 15,1995. Entries will be acknowledged promptly. Do not send micrographs: you must bring them or have them brought to the Meeting.

Meeting Office staff will print your description(s) in standard form and prepare them to be mounted along with your micrograph(s) at the Meeting.

Submitted micrographs remain the property of the entrants subject to the conditions above.
